My New Favorite Documentary

As loyal Fat Knowledge readers know, my old favorite documentary was Air Jaws. And while that one still has the best action footage, I have a new one that I think is even better. I saw it on Discovery HD channel. If you get a chance you should totally check it out. The Documentary is called: Cracking the Ocean Code.

Join genome pioneer Dr. J. Craig Venter as he scours the world's oceans for new life forms and genetic secrets that could help solve the planet's most urgent energy and climate challenges. From Nova Scotia to the Galapagos islands to Antarctica, Dr. Venter embarks on a mission to map the DNA of every microscopic organism in the ocean. Along the way, he discovers new species and new methods of tackling weather anomalies, ocean pollutants and even global warming.
I read a Wired article about this journey a while back and totally loved it. Sailing around the world, collecting bacteria samples for research, scuba diving in the best locations, eating gourmet food at night, pondering the big biological evolutionary questions, and thinking of ways to use the novel new genes that are being discovered. I think we are going to learn a lot from all of the bacteria DNA that gets sequenced. If you get a chance, check this one out.
